In a few hours, I’m going to try and register for the Dumbo Double Dare Challenge. That race weekend will always have a fond place in my heart. The Disneyland Half was my first runDisney race back in 2010 (which was a celebration of my 30th birthday) and I ran the inaugural Dumbo Double Dare back in 2013 and I PR’d in both the 10K and the Half.
A few months ago, my lovely Coach Dad, suggested that he wanted to go away some where, and maybe back to LA to check out this one record store he LOVED (Amoeba, if you are interested). At the time I made a joke saying, would you be ok with going back to Amoeba during Dumbo Weekend and he laughed and said me might be persuaded. I didn’t put too much stock in it…he says things and then changes his mind, as is his prerogative. I definitely thought we were not going when the Canada-US exchange rate decided drop into scary territory about 69 cents to $1 US….which also would mean that, to register for the Dumbo Weekend would cost me significantly more than $500 Canadian.
Then late Sunday he said “let’s do it.” I was surprised but excited and also feeling a little guilty. The price of the dollar and knowing that though he enjoys Disney, it isn’t his be all, end all vacation… I really struggled with feeling like I wanted to go…esp. when I know I have other trips (both Disney and non Disney) planned for the future…as well as potentially buying a place.
I spoke to some friends and they said go. Mostly because you never know when these opportunities will present themselves or when they will disappear. My dad isn’t getting any younger and at some point, all that will be left are the memories we made on trips like this….
*overklempt* Talk amongst yourselves. A peanut is neither a pea nor a nut…discuss…
Phew…tears did NOT ruin my make up….thank goodness…but I digress. After a long chat with my dad yesterday, he insisted he wanted to go and had already made a list of the things he was looking for in addition to Amoeba (ps. this is nearly a direct quote from his email, but he can’t remember the actual names of Disney rides):
- breakfast sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich
- Krispy Kreme Donuts
- kicking your (ie my) butt on the “shoot em up Toy Story arcade game” that he’s already started practicing for
- post race coke floats in magic kingdom
- free chocolate samples at Ghirardelli in California Adventure
- Tower of Terror, Splash Mountain, Big Thunder and the Cars Land ride
- breakfast sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich (just in case he wants seconds may want to go for a second round)
- In N Out Burger
- warm weather
- watching my kid kick butt at running
So with that list and knowing that these opportunities to do these fun things with my dad are dwindling I am going to try and get into the Dumbo Double Dare…and it’s funny, with the theme of Dumbo being dynamic duos…I can’t thing of anywhere I would rather be or anyone I’d rather hang with for that race weekend.
And now that the tears are back, I bid you all adieu. Wish me luck in registering!
