Throwback Thursday – I Got Lei’d

Now that the Queen City Half is done, I am all about three things: resting while maintaining my fitness level, trying to get all my work done before I leave on vacation and, obviously, VACATION!

I am lucky enough to have a two part vacation–starting with the trip to run The Tower of Terror 10-Miler with Princess Lindsey in Walt Disney World (thanks Impact!) and ending with 9 days in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The first two days I will spend solo on a surf tour, with the last week spent with dear Australian friends I have met a decade ago on a European Contiki Tour.

Today’s Throwback Thursday is a mini montage to the trip I did with one of my best friends from way back in 2008.  We did a few days in Honolulu, followed by a seven day cruise to Maui, Hawai’i and Kauai.

(Clockwise) The view of Diamond Head from the Sheraton Waikiki at sunrise. Me and my friend D, mid snorkel, at Waikiki Beach. Me at the official Swim Start and Run Finish point for the Ironman Triathlon World Champion Chips in Kona …while eating ice cream.

(Clockwise) Poipu Beach on the island of Kauai; me and D on a sun rise trek at Haleakala Crater on Maui; swimming with Sharks off the North Shore of Oahu; and my first designer shoes purchase–half price Manolo Blahniks for me and D, while taking in the view from our hotel (and drinking champers–not pictured).

(Clockwise) Me surfing off the North Shore of Oahu (one of the most thrilling days of my life, next to the shark swimming), the view at Haleakala Crater; me and D having our favourite cocktails from Dukes–Tropical Itches, complete with back scratchers, which are not pictured; and me and D standing on the freshly made land from a lava flow in Hilo on the Big Island…you can see the lava and the boiling ocean waters behind us.

It’s so funny how many memories came flooding back with putting together this post.  It gives me butterflies of excitement to see my friend and get to be in such a beautiful place again.  The fact that we have more friends coming with us this time…and I get to meet my friend’s daughter…my adorable little adopt a niece, just makes the whole thing that much sweeter.

Anyway, I should probably go–looking at these pictures is making me very sentimental and not increasing my likelihood of getting any real work done today, especially when I could be doing fun and fabulous trip things. 🙂

Take care and happy TBT!

    • That is the perfect way to describe it. I still remember the sounds of people in the cage (as you were in the cage, which floated at the surface and you essentially snorkeled in the cage) and it was exciting and hilarious. These gurgly, bubbly screams of excitement, which had an element of “oh my gosh, there’s a shark, run” fear to it. It still makes both me and my friend laugh to this day as I have never heard a sound like that ever again in my life. lol.

    • Unfortunately it’s not a full week–but I have at least two days worth of surfing…and maybe I can rent a board and hit some waves with my friend’s hubby if he is game. Either way, being minutes from the ocean is something I am GREATLY looking forward to. 🙂
