Bite-sizing My Life

Hi everyone!

I’m feeling a little overwhelmed right now – too many projects on the go.  We just moved into a new house last week, and I’m quickly learning that projects beget more projects.  Oh, you want to change the lightswitch cover? Sure you can!  But you better change the actual switches too, or else they won’t match anymore.  And once you’ve done that, you should probably paint the window trim white too so it matches.  And the baseboards too.  Except those baseboards are old and crappy, so better just get new ones.  Oh, you don’t have a saw to cut the new ones?  Let’s buy one of those too then.  And oh! – removing the baseboard peeled the old paint off the wall?  Well, you could touch it up, or we could just repaint the whole thing…and…and…and…all for want of a new lightswitch cover!  Argh!

Unfortunately we have had many “small” house projects like this quickly reveal themselves to be so much bigger already.  As I keep telling everyone, it’s nothing that time and money can’t fix, but it would be real nice to have more of both!!

And it’s a bit the same with life right now too.  I quit my gym because it’s not convenient to my new house or job…so for now, I don’t have a gym.  Nor do I have time to make time to go to the gym because I’m too busy working and doing house stuff!  But I *AM* signed up for a half marathon barely 4 weeks from now.  Any hopes of a PR are completely out the window – I am in terrible shape between the car accident and rehab, quitting the gym, starting a new job, moving, and just general life business – but at the same time I don’t want to embarrass myself!  Life is getting in the way of working out and eating well (moving = McDonald’s like 4 days a week….), so just like with the house projects, I need to break it into bite-sized pieces and maybe, just maybe, I will feel like I have accomplished SOMETHING, albeit small, as opposed to starting everything and finishing nothing!!

Here are my bite-sized intentions for the week:

– Eat breakfast every day.  Doesn’t have to be fancy, doesn’t have to be healthy; just eat it.
– Eat lunch every day.  See above for parameters.
– Run 3x this week for at least 20 mins. 
– Call the cable guys (for the 3rd time in 2 days…) and get the TV & phone service fixed.
– Install kitchen backsplash, if Home Depot ships it quickly enough.
– Maintain some semblance of sanity.

…so, that’s my week.  How’s yours?!

  1. Having just undergone my renovation, I know exactly what you meant and it was no small comfort to have these guys take care of all the weird knick knacks in the house cuz you’re right – one little change entails a lot of other ones…and it keeps on going.

    Now I’m just grateful to be done with it all but I also miss some of the excitement of building something anew.

    Still, enjoy life as it is now – as overwhelming as it is and enjoy it when it’s done.

  2. I hear you on the eating and running stuff! Life totally gets in the way of training and eating healthy sometimes and it’s the worst. I think once you get settled things will get easier. Good luck with race training!

  3. Yikes! Sounds like crazy-town over there! Setting small goals like that is really smart–reintroducing structure bit by bit will help you manage things and feel better. Good luck!

  4. I think your intentions are good ones and very achievable! I’m currently working on getting through the last of camp for my kiddo and still keeping my sanity. Next week will be even more crazy and then CALIFORNIA. Let’s do this!
