So it’s -37 with the windchill right now–that is my inspiration for sharing this selfie of me on Christmas Day in a suburb of Sydney, Australia in 2006. Behind me is the beautiful Pacific Ocean and Cronulla Beach.
This was my first Christmas away from home and I was in pretty much the farthest and most different place I could be from a regular Winnipeg Christmas.
I was in Australia to visit my dear friend D after I finished my Masters Degree. I spent five weeks out there, just hanging out with friends–it was amazing…and fortunately, not too hot (compared to my last trip there).
Spending Christmas without my family and normal traditions was equally fun and horrible (only horrible because I simply missed my family). I remember calling home and my entire extended family on my dad’s side sang a few bars of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” over the phone to me. This brought me to the most wonderful, happy tears.
The very next year, D came to Winnipeg, with our friend R in tow (as evidenced by last week’s TBT). A great time was definitely had by all. 🙂 I look forward to hopefully celebrating with my beautiful friend and her family again, soon. 🙂 Especially since the weather is far more pleasant in Australia than Winnipeg at this time of year.
