Friday Five

I so have a case of the TGIFs and I am greatly looking forward to a rather chillaxed weekend!  Though, truth be told, I’m thinking most of those vibes are due to sleep has been an issue for me this week.  I am hoping next week will be better–especially since I’ll be in Edmonton for work for most of the week.

But, I digress.  This post isn’t about my sleep problems.  Rather it is dedicated to the five things I want to bake for the holidays this year.  P.S. I have included links to the online version of the recipes, if I was able to find them.

1. Nutter Betters– recipe from Bouchon Bakery cookbook by Thomas Keller.  Oh Thomas…thank you for creating these wonderfully adapted (improved upon?) sweet treats below (which I gleefully ate in the sun in Beverly Hills the day after the Dumbo Double Dare) and including the recipe in your cookbook.  I look forward to recreating these amazing treats at home, though, perhaps closer to their inspiration–the Nutter Butter.

2. The Homemade You Know Whats from Butter Baked Goods by Rosie Daykin.  Shout out to a wonderful Canadian baker from the West Coast.  I have not baked anything from this cookbook–having only had it in my greedy little hands for a little more than 24 hours, but I’m dying to make this faux-oreo…er Faux-reo(?) recipe.  I tried the Bouchon version of the Faux-reo in LA and have the recipe in the aforementioned book, but wasn’t blown away–I mean, it was delicious, but the only thing oreo-like about it for me, was the actual build of the cookie (chocolate sandwich cookie with vanilla frosting).   I think these could make lovely holiday cookies–especially with a pretty, piped, red and/or green swirl frosting in the middle or maybe, perhaps even a mint frosting?  Plus, doesn’t everyone like oreos?

3. Decorated Chocolate Sugar Cookies from the Sweetapolita on the interwebs.  I have made these cookies a number of times–for “gingerbread’ houses (but with extra flour for stability) and for decorating and munching and they are divine.

I’ve already received some requests to make these, so I guess I will be making them again.Oh and check here for an icing recipe for your cookie decorating (especially if you don’t like royal icing).

4. Alton Brown’s Overnight Cinnamon Rolls from Food Network.  I have made these a handful of times in my life and they have turned out perfectly each and every time.  Sadly, I have not made them in about 5 years but I can’t think of why.  They are super easy and delicious and well, I’ve always wanted to have the tradition of opening Christmas presents while eating a warm and gooey, fresh from the oven, cinnamon roll–maybe this year I will finally start that tradition. 🙂

5.  Macarons.  As I still struggle with making these pesky, delicious cookies, I feel an urge to get my bake on and, once and for all, master them–just in time for the holidays.  Looking for trouble shooting tips of your own for Macarons?  Try here, here, here and here.  Truthfully, there are plenty, so if you don’t find the answers to your questions in these links, just check out Google.  That being said, I find the last two links to be particularly helpful–the former for great photos for assistance in knowing whether or not you’ve mixed enough and the latter for general tips, visual cues and a great tasting shell recipe.
